Wireless cameras are an effective and inexpensive way to monitor the safety of your home or office. Installation is relatively easy to complete as a “do it yourself” project, and shouldn’t take more than a few hours to set up and configure. Most wireless cameras emit a signal that performs at distances of up to 300 feet, possibly more. With such a wide range, the wireless camera can be moved around whatever space you choose without the hassle of having to reconfigure your equipment. Also thanks to the wireless capabilities, these cameras are more resistant to tampering than their hardwired counterparts.
There are, however, a few drawbacks to wireless cameras. Inherent to all wireless products is interference caused by other wireless devices and electrical equipment. Physical obstructions (such as walls) can also cause the wireless signal to relay a weaker signal, resulting in poor performance. It’s also important to remember that cordless phones can interfere with the camera’s wireless signal. One solution is to use a cordless phone that operates at 5ghz or higher rather than the 2.4ghz frequency that more wireless cameras use.
Powering your wireless security camera is simple. If you’re willing to change batteries or rechargeable battery packs for better mobility, then look for cameras with such features. Otherwise, there are models that plug into a wall outlet. For battery-powered cameras, some power-saving features such as motion sensors are available to lessen the battery consumption, allowing for maximum performance even in precarious camera locations.
