The international movie awards (Berlinale) take place every year in the German capital Berlin. They are in the so called A-category. In that category there are movie festivals with international competitiveness. There are the movie events in Cannes or the World Film Festival in Montreal for example. There you can see the importance of the Berlinale.
An international jury decides on who will be awarded with the silver and golden bear. The Berlinale is the biggest audience festival of the world. Of course there are certain categories for the award. There is for example the category Hommage, which might be the most meaningful one. This award is for a special person and his work of a lifetime. Therefore, it is admired.
Within the category Generation only movies are awarded that are most interesting for children and youth. Therefore, there are 11 children that build the jury for that category.
In 1951 the Berlinale took place for the first time, in that time in summer. Since 1978 it takes place in February. The event has duration of 10 days and includes a large program. There are, among other things, 400 movies that are shown. Most of them are premieres of Europe or worldwide.
Furthermore, there is the so called Berlinale Talent Campus. This includes workshops with approximately 350 young talents who can discuss with experienced professionals. This is a great possibility to get advocated. In this year there were 349 young people from 90 countries participating in that program.
There is a chance to become nominated for movies that were produced within the last 12 months before the musical and that were not shown beyond their countries of origin.
Every year there are 20 films competing.
The Berlinale takes place in the Berlinale palace at Potsdamer Platz and several other cinemas.
