The best 2005 Movies

While every year produces a number of movies that are really good, few years for better than 2005. Movies in this year were gut-busting and funny and heart-breaking and moving. My favorite 2005 movies are among my favorite movies of all time. Here are some of my favorites and other notable 2005 movies.

2005 was the year of the family friendly franchise. Fox finished its Star Wars franchise with the Sixth (or Third, depending on your prospective) Star Wars film, Revenge of the Sith. This movie went on to gross over 848 million dollars around the world and brought the end to this thirty year long series. Likewise, The Chronicles of Narnia opened its first film based on the hit books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The other big literary adaptation franchise hit that year was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth book in that monster series for Warner Brothers.

Steven Spielberg brought back his directorial touch to the summer blockbuster (long missed in the years since Jurassic Park), with War of the Worlds, as well as the critically acclaimed Munich. Peter Jackson also made his first movie since the huge success of his Lord of the Rings trilogy in King Kong, a wonderfully created re-make of the classic film. Robert Rodriguez made one of his best films to date with Sin City. Directors were really showing their stuff with their 2005 movies.

Awards were properly earned this year with 2005 movies such as Crash and Brokeback Mountain trading best picture awards in a variety of trade and critics awards ceremonies, though it was the ensemble-driven Crash that won the Best Picture Oscar based on its powerful look at racism in today’s society. Other award winning films include Good Night and Good Luck, Capote, Walk the Line and the smash-hit documentary March of the Penguins.

2005 movies included some exceptional comedies as well. Chief among them was the smash hit, Wedding Crashers, as well as the Judd Apatow breakout film, The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The small comedy Waiting, was one of the funniest of the 2005 movies, even though few people saw it at the theaters.

My favorite under-the-radar 2005 movies are actually quite numerous. Beyond Good Night and Good Luck, I also really enjoyed The Brothers Grimm, The Weatherman, Syriana, Lord of War, A History of Violence. Those are some 2005 movies you might not have seen.

Buying a guitar from a physical retail music store allows you to ‘test drive’ the guitar and ask more questions up front. Buying online or from a catalog may bring you more cash savings.

Tune the guitar, or have the seller tune it for you.

If you know how to play about five or six chords then play them. If you don’t know how to play, ask the seller to play them for you. This check ensures that the neck of the guitar is not warped, even though you couldn’t physically see it. If the neck is warped, and the guitar is properly tuned, then some of the chords will sound good, but others will sound as though the guitar is not tuned. If this happens, check the tuning again. assuming you don’t need a cure for tinnitus, and If it persists, then don’t buy the guitar.

Check the bridge of the guitar. If it’s made out of wood or plastic, make sure it’s not cracked or splitting. The bridge needs to be rock-solid, as a lot of pressure is exerted on the bridge by the strings.

Check the tuning heads. Do they turn easily, or are they very stiff and hard to turn. Even with the high tension of the strings, a quality guitar will have tuning heads that are fairly easy to turn.

No matter where you buy your guitar, if you know what to look for, and spend a little extra effort in your search for that ‘perfect’ guitar, not only will your fingers thank you, but also your ears, and all those who will come to join you around the campfire, or even go to see you in concert.

If you’ve ever taken piano lessons, then it’s very likely that you’ve played Beethoven’s Fur Elise piano music. It’s just about the most recognized classical tune ever. And if you learn the whole song in its entirety, you actually sound like you play the piano at a solid intermediate level. Furthermore, knowing this song by heart among a few others, you can be quite the crowd pleaser at a party where there’s a piano.

Don’t have a piano background? No problem, it’s never too late to learn. Even if you don’t enjoy piano by nature, or perhaps this particular song (Fur Elise by Beethoven), you might be motivated to learn some tunes on the piano simply to be that guy (or gal), that simply can perform a familiar song on demand. Sometimes that’s very rewarding in and of itself. There are many resources that teaches you how to play the piano (including Fur Elise piano parts) all in the comfort of you own home. For starters, check out our site http://furelisepiano.org for more resources.

British rock bands of all types soon followed in the Beatles’ wake. Perhaps the most famous (after the Beatles, of course) were and are still the Rolling Stones. The Stones fashioned themselves after great southern bluesmen like Muddy Waters and played a more aggressively bluesy style, heavy on distortion and power chords, than the Beatles did. Also coming out of Britain at that time were The Who, a band which in many ways originated two subgenres of rock: Punk rock and progressive rock. They were also the first of the British rock bands to make destroying the stage during the show a virtual art form.

If you are like me, then you probably want to have your music, video and files collection wherever you go, especially when you are on the road. It can sometimes be a little frustrating when you want to pack all your music collection on your mp3 player only to discover that the space is too small to accommodate them all. However no need to loose heart. With a 1GB mp3 player, you have enough space to carry almost all of your music files and enjoy them wherever you go. It is like having your hard disk with you at all times and getting access to all of your stored tracks.

There are different makes of makes of mp3 players and they all come with different capacities. Of course a 1GB mp3 player will cost more than a say 512MB mp3 player since it is almost double the capacity. However, what is exciting about a 1GB mp3 player compared to the lower capacity mp3 players is the fact that despite the double capacity, it will not cost double the price. In fact, you may be surprised that the difference between the two is a few extra dollars. This means that if you are looking for a bargain, you got it right there. The higher the capacity you go for, the less you will have to spend in the overall price.

Before I buy anything, especially online, I usually consider it prudent to do some research, which involves reading online reviews about people who have bought the same gadget and what they think of it. You might decide to take the same approach as you look for an mp3 player. A simple search for 1GB mp3 player will bring up plenty of information. Just look for the different makes on the market and see which you would like to buy. It would also be appropriate to look for the model specs since most manufacturers have them posted on their websites or on affiliate websites. If you are looking for a 1GB mp3 player, it is unlikely you will lack the needed information. Once you find the specs and discover from the user reviews that the model and make is what you are looking for, then the next step will be to make a purchase. You can either decide to make a purchase online, which comes with better discounted prices, or just visit a store down the block. The next time you will be enjoying your music, it will be on a 1GB mp3 player.

Getting The Demo Heard

Until you have music business advisors in your corner trying to promote you and there is a buzz going around about you, your demo will not reach the decision makers at the record labels. Record companies on a daily basis receive thousands of unsolicited CDs. Most likely your CD will be tossed into a bin located in a remote room filled with overflowing bins of CDs.

If you do decide to mail your CD to record label, call and first speak to someone. After sending your CD follow up to determine if the targeted individual received your material and another follow up call to determine if it was listened to. Submit 4 to 6 songs and send a bio and picture of yourself. If you cannot sleep waiting just remember this isn’t the preferred way to submit your material to major record labels.

Today’s children have a wider variety of free-time activities to choose from than ever before. Nearly every middle-class household in the U.S. has cable television with hundreds of channels, sophisticated gaming systems like Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360, and a broadband Internet connection that keeps them wired to the rest of the world. With all of these entertainment options at their fingertips, it’s sometimes hard to convince youngsters to put away their tech toys and develop some other skills. Creative pursuits such as drawing, painting, or playing an instrument have definitely taken a backseat to other activities these days, which is a shame. As a parent, I think music lessons for kids are as important to development as anything else.

When I was growing up, music lessons for kids were very popular. Almost everyone in my elementary school class played an instrument, be it drums, violin, piano, guitar, or what have you. The school even had special practice rooms that students could sign up to use during lunchtime or recess. In other words, music lessons for kids were a big deal back then, and schools did their best to accommodate and cultivate musical interest.

But that sort of thing is sorely lacking on today’s campuses, leaving it up to parents to find group or private music lessons for kids. Fortunately, there are many easy ways to do this, so getting your child signed up to learn how to play doesn’t take much work. And this is something that should not be neglected, as children with musical backgrounds often exhibit greater creativity and sensitivity than those who never study the subject.

The first place to look would be the local Yellow Pages to see if there are any teachers or institutions in the area that offer music lessons for kids. Try calling nearby high schools or community colleges as well, since these places often serve as hosts for piano, guitar, and drum classes. Running a Google search for the string “music lessons for kids”, along with your city and state, will likely yield good results.

As an alternative, many websites offer online music lessons for kids. Some are free, while others require a paid membership or subscription. The quality of the content varies significantly, however, so if possible you should request a demo or free trial period before parting with your hard-earned cash. Bear in mind too that since online classes don’t provide the same kind of feedback that you’d get from a real teacher, they might not be the best option for beginners.

If you’re concerned about your children drowning in a world of high-tech toys that stunt creativity, then now is your chance to do something about it. Start by finding affordable music lessons for kids in your area, and get your young ones excited about playing an instrument!

For those of us endowed with a reasonable but not extraordinary degree of musical interest, learning guitar chords in place of complicated riffs is sufficient for impressing our friends. Just learn G, C, and D and you can play almost any song, some will tell you. This is of course not entirely true, but it’s not completely without merit. While G, C, and D are extremely useful and commonly used chords, it’s not too much of a stretch to learn a few more (though it may be a stretch for your fingers) and expand your repertoire.

The goal of learning guitar chords can be accomplished in several different ways. Many people choose to teach themselves, learning the chord fingerings with the help of a guitar instruction book or an online reference. Others find it more helpful to learn with the guidance of an actual guitar player. Guitar lessons are offered widely but if you don’t want to spend the money, someone within your social circle is likely to have picked up guitar playing at some point. Both choices of instructor have their advantages and downsides. You may feel more comfortable and familiar with a friend, but an instructor may have more expertise. Of course, talent and teaching ability is variable across different individuals and obviously the person and/or method that will best assist you in learning guitar chords is the best choice. However, those who have difficulty with spatial perception might find it best to learn on their own. Sometimes people get confused when directly watching someone else play a chord, because the fingering will be reversed when you play it on your own guitar. You can try to remedy this by watching people play while standing behind them, but it is often difficult to see because of the guitar’s anatomy.

After you’ve picked the method of learning guitar chords that you prefer, the next steps are to practice, practice, and practice. Don’t expect to play it perfectly the first time you try it out. Prepare yourself for lots of buzzing strings and hand cramps. Training your hand to play chords is difficult in the beginning because it requires molding it into an otherwise unnatural position. Over time, your wrist will flex back more easily and your fingers will go where you tell them to. Those of you with shorter fingers may find it more difficult than others but like they say, a little practice goes a long way, longer than a long-fingered person who doesn’t put in as much effort as you will.

It is great that you decided to play the guitar. At first it is fairly intimidating because other people and guitar players in concerts are just so much better. However, it is important to keep learning the basic techniques.

Once you have acquired your guitar the best place to start teaching yourself guitar is learning the chords. You could get these from a book but there are many websites online that show you how to play just about any guitar chord you would ever need to know. Practice the fingerings on these and memorize how to do as many as possible. Using G, E minor, C, and D you should be able to play many of the songs that you know and love. Practice moving from chord to chord even though it may seem difficult in the beginning.

The next step to learn is strumming. Strumming is really about rhythm. For some songs it is difficult to strum them properly because they are complicated. Listen carefully to the rhythm of the song to get the strumming. At first the best you might be able to do is to just hit the right chord at the right time. As you get better, your strumming will get better.

Learn guitar tablature or tab. Some musical academics do not like guitar tab, but it is really useful for beginners because it is easy and helps you play riffs that it would otherwise take you quite awhile to learn on your own. Guitar tab shows the six strings of the guitar and will have numbers on each string. The numbers mean that you play the fret on that certain string. Just play the tab from left to right and you will be playing the song.

If you want to get a teacher to teach your specific techniques, do not do so until you have learned these basics. This will save you money on at least your first four weeks of lessons.

If you ever liked to hang around high-end audiophile outlets that stock home theater equipment priced well into the stratosphere and wonder at the kind of people who might actually come in with the intent of buying, perhaps you have a short memory. As recently as five years ago, a home theater that could look like something that came out of Neverland was something you could reasonably expect to cram into your rec room if you had reasonable credit (I exaggerate a litle bit, of course). Back then, money was practically available on tap. If you were sufficiently passionate about something to want to to fork over a reasonable monthly payment for, a custom-installed projection system, La-Z Boys to melt into, and a sound system that could crumble your foundations could be yours with nothing more than a cursory background check.

The home theaters of your ultimate fantasies can set you back as much as Porsche Panamera (or two); but just as the market for Porsches and Ferraris hasn’t dried up just because there is a recession, the makers of high-end THX-certified equipment still find a great market – it’s just that they are no longer hoping to expand anywhere below the levels of the super-rich as they once used to when easy credit was available. But let’s for a moment wonder about what would be within reach, if those days were still with us.

In this exclusive club, that is never satisfied with anything less ambitious than a faithful recreation of the big screen experience right at home, the price of admission starts at around $150,000. At Goodwin High End in Waltham, Massachusetts for instance, that price would buy you a home theater installation, if you don’t include the price of the electronics. All said, after you’ve added in the prize of every extra cabling length and sound trap, and the consultation charges, you could very well be looking at a $200,000 tab.

If spending as much on equipping a home theater as you would on buying a house for your family seems a little over-the-top, consider this – custom-built home theaters aren’t just assembled out-of-the-box out of high quality components. They are built by hand. Acoustics experts come in with laser- and sonar- equipped gauges; they measure your space for acoustic anomalies, standing waves, poor wall and ceiling angles, and materials. They then proceed to build a whole new room inside your space, and separate it from the outer shell with spacers. The inner room is built to be perfect, with the perfect materials and the most acoustically efficient form.

Home theaters at the very high end are not as much about the equipment you buy, as they are about the space they are placed in. The perfect acoustic space that picks up sound, and delivers it to your years without sacrificing the quality of the sound the speakers put out is high art. It could take months to put together such a system. It’s like they are building a whole acoustic music instrument to place you inside, and this, as the you would expect, will take money. But there are high-end home theaters were possible for people who aren’t out partying with Bill Gates every weekend too.

Lyric hi-fi in New York specializes in high-end home theaters that don’t go over the top. What you’ll get for your money is a more reasonable 400sq. ft. screening room with seating for six, and a high-end projection system; it could run you wo about $60,000, and could win you plain admiration from your friends.

Everyone wants to know how far you can go with any kind of over-the-top passion – cars, jets, yachts. How far can they go investing in home theaters? A millionaire in San Francisco put one together for a budget that just squeaked past $1 million, and the aim was to replicate the theater acoustics the owner enjoyed at one time at the movies when a child. It was in the news not long ago that the millionaire didn’t really make it past the recession with his fortune intact.

It is a shame that classical music is not introduced to young kids these days. They instead listen to stuff I can not call music. I have to protect my kids from load “music” littered with 4 letter words. I do this by leaving the public area or asking the gang member to kindly turn down his stereo.

But these are the times. I admit I like some hard driving guitar based rock music now and then provided it has safe lyrics. As a classical fan I appreciate the complexity and charm of classical music. Mozart was a rebel but nothing he produced musically is offensive. My family enjoys a mixture of Christian and classical ambiance music quietly in the background.

Guitar Software

Everyone loves Guitar Hero, because it aids in your fantasy of getting up on stage, turning the volume on your Marshall stack up to 11, and really setting your axe on fire. I’ve heard of real-life guitar gods who regularly tour and play to screaming fans who number in their hundreds, coming home only to pick up the tiny plastic controller for Guitar Hero, and get to playing for a virtual audience right away. If you actually have skills that can win a following on the guitar, a guitar software experience that does such a poor imitation of the the real thing can seem kind of unsatisfying. And this is where the Kontrol Edition of Guitar Rig 4 from Native Instruments, comes in.

If you have fearsome skills as a real guitarist, Guitar Rig offers you a guitarist’s dream lineup, all ready for you to pump the best shredding tones out of. You get all the pedal emulations, you get a variety of amps, and you get effects to your heart’s content. Did you ever want to play with Eric Clapton’s trademark Fender Twin? Did you ever want Van Halen’s signature Marshall stack sound? Do you have more ideas for combinations of effects pedals than you have cash for? If so, Guitar Rig 4 Kontrol Edition is creativity at its best in guitar software. Here’s how it works.

The system itself, a hardware and software bundle, and it goes for about $400; the hardware is a great pedal board-like device that arrays all the controls out for you that also holds a high-quality audio interface. it allows you to plug your guitar directly into your PC, and then to select from a mind-boggling range of guitar sounds and processing gear. Each one of those pieces of equipment, pedals, processors and what have you, offers the full range of adjustments and settings that you would get with the real stuff, you can even search for effects by the character that you’re looking for. And since you’ll be playing everything through your own real guitar, it doesn’t feel detached and disembodied like it can with a keyboard.

You buy a keyboard, and you’ll right away see presets that are named for the classic instruments they copy – 808 for drums, Rhodes for the famous on-stage electric piano, and so on. Guitar Rig 4 does emulate every dream vintage and modern instruments you could want; but it stops short of naming them exactly after their real-world inspirations. Maybe Native Instruments wants to stay free of getting sued for copyright infringement.

Setting your rig up on Guitar Rig 4 is pretty easy. You have your array of processors right in front of you, and you just drag and drop them in your big window. The flexibility you are granted in altering and sculpting how you sound, is staggering. I really like about this guitar software, is rather strangely, the hardware that’s bundled with it. It comes with a Guitar Rig for control the truly looks stage worthy and roadworthy for the way it is made. It’s a stomp box with foot switches that you can use to control a number of sound parameters onboard the software – you need things, speed up the tempo, turn effects on often so one. An expression pedal to one side lets you control things like from a little and wah. The stomp box includes an audio interface with professional low-latency specifications you need, you connect it to the computer through you a USB connection.

Performance is fast, smooth and preferably sophisticated, guitar rig three brings to top-notch processing at a price anyone can afford. But the/emulations begin.

Beginner Piano Lessons

For most people, learning how to play the piano can be intimidating at first. However the tension and anxiety that surrounds stepping into the unfamiliar undertaking can be eased by the appropriate beginner piano lessons. Ideally, piano lessons for beginners should focus on training people how to read the musical notes and hitting the right keys. Before knowing how to read the notes however, one must know where each key lies on the piano.

As any person with an interest in the piano will have noted, black keys on the piano are grouped either in a pair or in groups of three. The black keys represent the “sharps and flats” with the sharps having higher tones than the flats. A beginner also needs to know that the key on extreme right in the Piano is named ‘C’. Other keys after that are sequentially named up to ‘G’. The next key after the latter is named ‘A’. Once the beginner has mastered the keys, the next step requires them to understand how the chords are read. As all beginner piano lessons will reveal, chords are made of a combination of three notes, which are played simultaneously to produce a specific sound. They are divided into major and minor chords.

In order to master the art of playing the piano well as a beginner, one must be ready to dedicate at least one hour a day practicing the notes and chords taught in the beginner lessons. Although there are different variations of the piano, a full-sized piano has 88 black keys and the same number of white keys. A beginner piano player also needs to understand that there are 12 groups of notes on the piano, which he or she must commit to memory in order to successfully play the piano. This however does not mean that the beginner student should spend a lot of time learning the scales and drills. Rather, lessons for beginner students must incorporate activities meant to not only build musical skills in the learners, but also engage them fully. Why do I say this? Well, human reason dictates that if a person does the same thing over and over again, sooner or later they become bored. The same thing happens to beginner piano learner. If the lessons are not engaging them fully, they not only become bored, but a good number of them become frustrated hence dropping off the classes.

Among the items that should be integrated in the beginner piano lessons include: video lessons, sound files, diagrams and pictures. The use of games is also essential in helping beginners build piano-playing skills. As beginner students learn the notes, most piano beginner lesson also insist of imparting them with music-related theory. Often times, students enroll for piano lessons thinking that all they will do is learn the notes and play on. However, most piano teachers understand that for a person to play the piano perfectly, they need to understand why a particular song was composed. Once the students understand the intentions behind the song, they are then able to infuse more feelings and depth when playing that specific tune.

Software Guitar Lessons

While playing the guitar can be a pretty cool experience, teaching your fingers to find their way around a fretboard can seem the very opposite of cool – bleeding fingers, aching knuckles and the loneliness as you slave away. If you are going to go through all of that, at least, you should be allowed a sense of inspiration, hope and purpose to keep you company. While you could go sign up to learn with a professional teacher, you do know that pretty soon, perhaps in just a month, what you paid the teacher could very well add up to more than the price you paid for your first guitar. That’s where software guitar lessons come in – you get to spend as much time as you want being taught to handle the coolest instrument on the planet, you do that at your own pace, and you never need to be worried about the time or the money takes.

Let’s start out by looking at the standard well-respected guitar packages. You can expect most software guitar lessons to cost around what you would expect to pay for just one regular guitar lesson – about $50. But there do exist a few well-endowed packages that cost in excess of $200 that intermediate guitar enthusiasts really rave about. A guitar lessons package usually does its teaching with clear close-up-shot videos of professional teachers laying out the principles of how it’s done, with actual playing. You also get an online chord dictionary usually that shows you pictorials of how you play chords on a fretboard, a software metronome, and a software tutor to help with one of the toughest parts of learning – tightening and tuning guitar strings just so.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. When you go in the store for the best package of guitar lessons to suit your needs, what would you look for? To begin with, you aren’t looking for something that’ll lick you into shape and turn you into a virtuoso guitarist. What you want is something that will help you enjoy the first few months you spend with your instrument, and that will teach you a few of the basics without rushing you. For this, you need to find something that’s easy to use, that gives you plenty of practice tools and exercises, and isn’t too elementary that you would get bored with it.

With these in mind, let’s look at some of the best software guitar lessons packages they have on the shelves right about now. Charanga Software’s Guitar Coach Deluxe is one of my favorites. It teaches you to play classical guitar and it does this out of the six CDs in the package. It has a CD completely given to teaching you to their basics of the guitar, and the others teach you specific chords and songs. Each specific technique comes with a video of a live guitarist showing you exactly how it’s done. It lets you play along with each lesson, and you get to record your performance. For all this, you pay a grand total of $40.

eMedia’s Guitar Method teaches you to play the guitar – electric or acoustic – and features the work of PhD guitar instructor Kevin Gary. It has more than 150 lessons, and happily, they really go into specifics like how to pick the strings and how to play the chords. The chord dictionary comes with attached sound clips so that you can hear exactly how it’s supposed to be done. I love the way it tries to teach you how to enjoy guitar without needing the software’s handholding all the time. The lessons themselves are just wonderfully explained and laid out, you get all of this for $60.

But what if you aren’t a real beginner, and you need guitar lessons that are a little more in-depth. Guitar Magic Evolution is your thing then; this package goes into guitar theory, and the esoteric world of chord formations. They offer 170 lessons, dozens of songs and revealing videos.

My choice for the beginner would then be eMedia’s Guitar Method. And for an advanced learner, Guitar Magic Evolution is hard to beat.

When you are starting out and the guitar hasn’t really captured your imagination yet, it can be hard to think of the learning budget you’re willing to commit to. Who’d want to say, “I want to dedicate myself to the God of all guitars, but I’m not willing to put down change any larger than $10 for a lesson”? My father hated the idea of skimping when learning , and he sent me to a great guitar instructor; but even my idealist father began to realize that a $50-an-hour lesson plan wasn’t going to get me very far. To begin with, his dollars would begin to run out before I got along too far. And when you are just starting out with your guitar music lessons, getting your fingers to feel their way around doesn’t really take professional coaching. There is the feeling of self-conscious embarrassment, playing before anyone else too when you learn in a traditional setting. And what do you do when you forget a pointer the teacher gave you? Online guitar music lessons, a software application or online videos for the beginner are a deal that can’t be beat. Let’s look at some of the choices you have at your service, shall we?

For online video lessons, Jamplay is one of the top names in the business. What it is, is an online guitar website with a stockpile of 400 hours of professionally recorded guitar lessons. With that much instruction a click away, you get to skip around, and watch experts in every style of guitar playing lay down the basics in a really approachable manner – there are chord diagrams, exercises, tablature, everything. And best of all, Jamplay has instructors online to help students through rough spots. Now 400 hours is a pretty big deal; if it weren’t for the user-friendly layout they use, it would be pretty impossible to navigate the website. Thankfully though, they’ve paid attention to this, and you could easily get more value on an online guitar music lesson site like this then you could buying your own set of videos. Unlimited access goes for $20, and it’s hard to argue with it at a price point like that.

Next up, let’s look at what it should be like taking guitar music lessons with software you install on your computer. Jamorama has been at the top of the heap for PC-based guitar music lessons. The great thing about this package is the way it addresses the absolute beginner. Jamorama has a basic instructional method that is effective; and large well-designed books that you download to supplement the software. A couple of hundred video examples and jam tracks keep you company with everything in the book, and you get all kinds of useful support software – a metronome, guitar playing video games, a guitar tuner, and a chord instructor. The package goes for $50, and for the price, you truly get value.

My personal favorite though, is the Learn and Master package that consists of 25 DVDs. You can’t download it though, considering how large it is. The package is a concept of the Legacy Learning Systems program in Nashville, and the instructor on the job, Steve Krenz has a great teaching style. Each DVD contains two teaching lessons, and there are five disks that give you a full well-accompanied version of all the songs they teach you on the DVDs. Turn them on, and you have a blast playing along the with your newfound guitar playing skills. The instructional disks themselves teach you how to read music, how to strum, how to build harmony, and how to pick chords in the blues and rock styles; the recording in slow-paced, and the teaching quality is matchless. At $150, there are a steal.

Technology certainly democratizes things. Consider how difficult it was at one time to have any access to professional quality teaching without paying the full price of entry. In my book, this truly is progress.

Punk rock culture today has slid back from what punk rock history embodied. Figures from the history of punk rock would look down upon modern punk rock’s poseur and sell-out mentality. Today, punk really is more about green hair than nonconformity, and being punk is almost like conformity in itself. Punk is mainstream-punk rock fashion is distributed commercially at chain stores like Hot Topic, punk rock music is played on mainstream alternative radio stations, Kurt Cobain is programmed into Guitar Hero as an avatar. Punk is now a fad as if being anti-establishment is cool, and when everyone tries to be different they all become the same again.

What early electronics did for electronic music simply doen’t compare to what the digital revolution did. Nowadays, computer generated music is incredibly sophisticated. People can write, arrange, and play whole scores without so much as touching a piano keyboard. There are fewer and fewer music composers who don’t use computers. Almost everyone in the industry uses fancy digital synthesizers, computer sound editing software, and sophisticated signal processing to get just the sound they want.

Of course, the best way to hear computer generated music has always been through a computer. Nowadays, there are literally tens of thousands of electronic musicians who are hooked up to online distribution sites of one type or another.

Folk Music

Folk music escapes precise definition, even among musicologists and anthropologists, yet most people can recognize it when they hear it. This recognition is not surprising. Most people in the world are exposed to folk songs from the moment they enter the world in the form of lullabies their mothers sing to them to soothe, comfort and lull them to sleep. These lullabies were probably sung to these mothers by their own mothers and so on, into the distant past. The chief characteristic of this kind of music is that it is an oral tradition, a tradition shared among a group of people with a common culture and history, and occupying a specific region. Music scores are generally absent, yet variation is kept to a minimum. You sing and play it as you heard it.

Folk music emerges, rather than breaks onto the popular scene, carrying with its memorable melodies lyrics that speak of what is common to the folk, to the vast majority of the human population. From the folk, it clearly originates from the lower economic stratas of society, those who are not apt to be exposed to the more artistic, classical styles that are found among city dwellers, in castles and capitals, among the wealthy and powerful. More closely associated to the country people as opposed to the city dweller, to the tribe than to modern nation states, to the laborer than to the elite, folk music springs from the unaffected, simple, earthy hearts of the common man.

Coming from the working class, folk song themes cover the range of common human experience, from the pain and sweat of hard labor to the stirrings of the heart. Many hymns properly belong in the folk category. Many speak of poverty, of travel and migration, of loss and death. Many laud the virtues of wine, of celebration gatherings and of dance and love. Folk heroes and their exploits might be recalled. Conflicts with the law are common themes, while others lament the effects of war on the common man. In recent decades, social protest against economic inequalities, racial discrimination and the duplicity of government have been addressed by popular folk songs, such as those songs that appeared in the 1960s and 1970s. Folk music tells the story of the common people’s experience.

Folk songs went largely unstudied until the rise of nationalist sentiments, as governments of the people arose. Nations sought to distinguish their identities, and many regionally popular songs became national. The national folk song is more contrivance than fact. Most modern states are made up of more than one ethnicity, and folk music is typically ethnic in character. This was recognized by the Grammy Awards when the folk category, used since 1959, was dropped in favor of its replacement category, ethnic and traditional recordings. Whether called folk or ethnic, folk music remains an expression of the common man, his world view and his feeling towards it.

With the predominance of popular music today, folk songs are in short supply and may soon become an artifact of a time past. Let’s hope that the folk from whom this music originates will not also disappear with the folk songs that once expressed the heart of the simple man.

If an artist is able to find a way to cut that elusive evergreen Christmas hit, be it his or her own composition, one written by another songwriter, or does a cover of an old favorite, they can consider it made. Their names go down in the common folklore, and they become permanently a part of a beautiful Christmas tradition, sometimes as important t a part of it as the gifts and the snow. Then of course there is the consideration of the millions of dollars each year that they make in royalties. To be able to create an all-time Christmas favorite like The Little Drummer Boy or Deck the Halls, should be something every songwriter on the planet would give his eye-teeth for. There is of course the revenue that the initial recording would bring them; but it could live on too – like Baby Please Come Home has been recorded by such major acts like Mariah Carey, U2 and Jon Bon Jovi. What is it that makes us so irretrievably associate some tunes as our top Christmas songs, and not others?

Christmas is all about tradition, and to a certain degree, whatever songs you grew up with in your childhood, is going to be on your top Christmas songs list certainly. But apart from that, for a song like the Christmas Shoes, the composer of that one was able to appeal to fans of more than one genre – that kind of attraction in a song can help. If we were to look at the stars on the rise in today’s music scene, who might be our likeliest vote to come up with the next perennial addition to our top Christmas songs list? We can certainly think of a few. Let’s see what you think.

Your Christmas Whiskey is a fun little number by Minus 5. Imaginatively, it is about how Christmas can be the warmest time of the year with a couple of stiff drinks. What with the drinking and all, this might be a bit of a novelty number; it might stick around for a few years, but perhaps it isn’t meant to be an all-time feel-good favorite. Consider Vickie Winans’ Special Day; this little favorite is not the traditional jangly merry song; there is a groove to it, and above all, romance. This could be quite in the running to be on the top Christmas songs list of the nation, but it might be a little too personal.

Perhaps we should look at old favorites that were overlooked when they first came out; A Mother’s Christmas Wish by Olivia Newton-John is a song about a mother who looks at her children on Christmas Day, and dreams beautiful dreams for them. Here is a theme that would speak to anyone, and the beauty of the tune and the words certainly take us there. If we had to pick another for our list of new top Christmas songs, we would have to go with Jim Brickman’s My Angel. This beautiful lullaby for Christmas is in the finest traditions of the great blend of sentimental feeling and spiritual strength. The songs already feature on iTunes top downloads; if they could stay that way for a few more years, the nation would have an all-new set of top Christmas songs.

With the guitar having such an appeal, American youth continue to flock to teachers and musicians offering guitar music lessons at schools, youth centers, and private homes. There is no better teacher to give guitar music lessons then, well, a teacher, some person who can instruct, observe, correct and lead the music student as she makes her way to musical adeptness. Unfortunately, most public schools do not give guitar music lessons, but continue to concentrate on those instruments typically found in a marching band. Out of touch for nearly a century now, our elementary and high schools still hold to the philosophy that music should be for marching, not for appreciation.

History repeats itself, or at least, that’s what we are often told. When it comes to the history of 80′s pop culture, there are probably some things that are best left in the past, and others that could at least provide some fluffy entertainment. If you go to the highlight reel of 80′s pop culture, you’ll see a wide variety of flashy fashion, music and fads. Here, we list some of the best and worst that 80′s pop culture has to offer.

BEST: Madonna

Madonna represents everything that was right with the 80′s. In her legendary cone bra, she revolutionized pop music, and showed the world what it took to stay on top of the music industry as a whole. She never stayed with one image for very long, and as a result, she has become an 80′s pop culture icon for the ages.

WORST: Leg Warmers

Here’s one thing from the 80′s pop culture vault that is, rather unfortunately, making a resurgence. The fashion statement became popular after the movies Fame and Flashdance hit the scene, but these woolen monstrosities were not preventing dancers’ legs from cramping. Instead, they were creating embarrassing photos for their patrons to scowl at years down the road.

BEST: Oregon Trail

Load up the wagons, and head out west! One of the first accessible computer games, this 80′s pop culture phenomenon involved blazing the Oregon trail in the face of horrors like rattlesnakes, famine and dysentery. Careful crossing that river, you might lose an ox!

WORST: Mullets

Another fashion faux pas from days gone by, the mullet is by far one of the most frightening components of 80′s pop culture. It was business in the front, and a party in the back, but ridiculous looking all around. Worn by men, women, and Billy Ray Cyrus, this hairstyle should stay buried in the past.

BEST: Star Wars

Ok, so maybe the first movie came out in 1977, but The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi solidified Star Wars as an 80′s pop culture phenomenon. You either wanted Princess Leia, or wanted to be her, and the force was strong in you. Yoda was the ultimate source of wisdom, and you could not wait for the next installment to come out. You probably had the action figures, too, didn’t you?

WORST: John Lennon’s Assassination

Sure, the Beatles were already over. However, John Lennon was a legendary artist who was still making contributions to the world of music. His death shook 80′s pop culture to its core, and the void he left behind was filled with bands like Air Supply and Wham!, which is a travesty in and of itself. So long, John. You will be missed.

Schools and school districts across the country, from Hawaii to Maine, from Florida to Alaska and all stops in between, have had to severely cut back on funding for “extra-curricular activities.” This can mean anything from sports programs, to drama, to music and art and beyond. And it’s going to take a long-term toll on the students who are deprived of these activities, deprived of a more well-rounded, complete education.

The importance of music education, in particular, should not be underestimated. Americans lag behind in mathematics more than we do in most other subjects relative to the rest of the western world, and the very basis of music is math. When stressing the importance of music eduction, you’re really stressing the importance of math education as well. It’s key to understand that from the very first when considering the importance of music education.

Beyond the simple intuitive benefits – such as, a child sitting in his or her room playing the trumpet or guitar is much less likely to go out and get into trouble than a chile restlessly planning a nighttime excursion – there are other, measurable benefits delineated by numerous studies.

There is, of course, a strong correlation between music and academic achievement. Countries thoughout the world – be they in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa or beyond – that produce the most academically advanced teenagers almost uniformly have aggressive, comprehensive music education programs that begin as early as kindergarten. Early music education has been shown to improve not only an understanding of both basic and advanced mathematical concepts, but has also proved to be an emotional stabilizer for children learning to work within a group context. The ability to sing, or play on key at a given moment in concert with those around you develops the neurological pathways necessary for collaboration as seen in the professional environment later in life.

Proof of this are the myriad reports that many of the top executives and engineers at Silicon Valley companies either still are or had been recipients of a music education at some point in their lives. It may not seem to be a straight line from learning the recorder at a second grader to pulling down a six-figure-salary as an adult, but there are enough data points there to show the importance of music education in doing exactly that.

What’s more, there are data points simply within the academic curricula that show the importance of music education. Everything from predicted college success to likelihood of emotional stability under the press of exams can show a positive impact from a musical education.

One thing that almost everyone has on their wedding day, no matter how big or how small their celebration may be, is music. Music for wedding day is traditional in most areas of the world, though what you want to do with your music on your big day is entirely up to you. Most brides walk down the aisle to music, but you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to. Some use traditional wedding songs, and some choose to have something else entirely. It’s your day, so do what feels right to you.

You know your personality, so choose your music for wedding celebrations accordingly. You and your spouse should agree on what you want to do for music, as it fits with what you want to do with your wedding day in general. Some find that they want to go with something different for the walk down the aisle, only to find that they are more traditional than they thought they were, and they end up using the traditional wedding march. Remember, while listening to alternatives, to listen to the tried and true just to see how it feels. You may surprise yourself with what you choose.

Music for wedding celebrations is not just about the walk up and down the aisle. It is also about the rest of the ceremony. Some choose to have the ceremony itself music free, and that is okay. Others choose to have a song played somewhere in the ceremony, but remember that this can be awkward. Instead of using a taped song, see if you can find someone to sing it live during your ceremony. This is much more moving and means so much more to both you and your guests. Not everyone knows someone who can or even will do this, but if you can find someone, this is a great touch.

You may choose to have music playing for your guests both before and after the ceremony. This can be a nice way to pass the time while your guests greet each other and wait for the ceremony to start. This also helps people keep their voices down, as it is a constant reminder that something special is about to happen. This type of music for wedding ceremonies is often mellow and classical in sound, and helps everyone (including the bride) to relax. This can be done on organ, piano, or can be played from prerecorded selections through a sound system. Many churches and other ceremony locations have all options open to you.

Don’t forget about your reception when thinking about music for wedding celebrations. You have a great many options for your reception that you can use to keep everyone happy. There are live music bands that range from rock to classical music that you can hire, or perhaps you just want to have DJ quietly playing some of your favorite songs. You can also have prerecorded tapes or CDs play while you are enjoying the after wedding celebration with family and friends. Do what works best for you.

When there is a song on the radio that interests you, pretty often you do want to know exactly what the singer says – to sing along with the song don’t you? Lots of people do apparently, and hence the popularity of lyrics sites. For any given song that you look up, you’re guaranteed to find it on at least a half dozen sites with names like azlyrics, elyrics, stlyrics, metrolyrics and so on. Did you ever wonder how these people could publish all these lyrics to hit songs (and get all the annoying advertising on the side as a reward to pay them for their trouble) and not have the songwriters or the record labels sue them for some kind of copyright infringement? Here are these people publishing someone else’s copyrighted creative work and profiting from it. Doesn’t that just cry out for some kind of action from these companies that will sue college students for $100,000 if they catch them sharing peer-to-peer? Actually, that last lyrics website, Metrolyrics, just found out about this the hard way.

Metrolyrics reportedly got its start 10 years ago when a high school student, a boy called Milun, found that he could never find the words for the songs he loved when he looked on the Internet. So he just happened to start his own website as a kind of gag; and he put up the words to lots of songs. Pretty soon, there were so many visitors at his site for his free lyrics that he was beginning to make advertising money. The Website is pretty successful now, with millions of dollars in advertising revenues and more than 10 million visitors each month. All these free lyrics though were written by hard-working musicians elsewhere. Songwriters who often don’t feel that they are compensated enough for their hard work and creativity, are often gratified to see their lyrics in such demand; they just wish they could be up for some kind of a share. All they’ve ever had all these years have been pennies earned off printed lyrics for songs and sheet music.

And so songwriters and the record labels that represent them, have been getting a little pushy with the lyrics sites – to get them in on the action. Not that the lyrics websites are unwilling; it’s just that there is no system in place for lyrics royalty collection the way there is for music royalty collection. There are just so many songwriters and publishers out there; there’s no system that could easily get all of them together in one place to help distribute the pennies around. Help is at hand now though with businesses called license aggregators – examples would be companies like Gracenote; these are prominent in this area. Companies like these go around gathering licenses and permission from the thousands of songwriters and record labels out there, to try to mediate between them and the sites that publish lyrics for songs.

When websites do not play nice with the lyrics licensors, some of them are forced to shut down. There are about a hundred sites that publish lyrics for songs on the Internet; and ever since third-party license aggregators like Gracenote came into the picture, a handful of them have begun to do it legally. The others are beginning to feel a bit of pressure with a few lawsuits mounted against them. Lots of these websites operate outside the US, and of course there’s no way to get on their case there.

You love music and you love to hear it like it was meant to be heard, correct? If so, you should consider a 6 channel amp because when you hear the sound, you will wonder how you settled for less. If you spend a lot of time driving or commuting, this can definitely be a worthwhile investment for you.

You may be wondering how a 6 channel amp could improve the sound so much? Basically, the higher number of channels you have, the higher and clearer the sound because you are hearing more watts. If you listen to your favorite song on a single channel amp and then listen to it on a 6 channel amp, you may not even recognize the song because you will be hearing everything and much of what you never heard before.

Of course, you can add as many amps as you want, but make sure you research your vehicle, time spent in the car, and how much your budget allows. Additionally, the higher price you pay for an audio system, the higher your vehicle becomes a target for theft, so make sure you have a good alarm system installed before you spend 100′s of dollars on stereo equipment.

2009 proved to be a banner year for the music industry, even amid the recession. It seems that when people only have a few bucks in their pockets they would rather spend it on a good bit of music than save it. This is good news for the music industry which has been suffering from rampant worldwide piracy. Very few people actually purchase music anymore it seems and most of the money that artists make now is from live performances. Even that has dried up though since most people can’t afford to go to an expensive rock concert these days. Nonetheless some bands are enjoying great success and 2009 produced a crop of top 10 music hits that have surprised a jaded industry. My list leaves out the really boring stuff like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and concentrates on cutting edge alternative music.

The best album of the year had two or three of the top 10 music hits and that was Kings of Leon with their wonderful CD “Only By The Night”. The brothers Followill, led by lead singer Caleb, churned out such masterpieces as “Use Somebody” and “Sex on Fire” both of which were huge, crossover, international top 10 music hits. Although many think that this band just appeared last year, they have been around for about five years now and have had many great songs and CDs before “Only By The Night”. Check out earlier songs like “California Waiting”, “The Bucket”, “Molly’s Chambers”, and “Holyroller Novocaine” and you will be blown away.

Last year also saw the emergence of other top 10 music hits such as “Lay Me Down” by the Dirty Heads featuring Rome, the lead singer for the super alternative ska group Sublime. Finger Eleven had a couple of massive top 10 music hits including the very popular “Paralyzer” which has had audiences worldwide dancing since it first came out. Three Days Grace came out with the beautiful and powerful “Never Too Late” and Incubus scored once again with their ballad “Love Hurts”, not to be confused with the classic rock hit by the same name.

Famous bands did not fare as well last year with the exception of Green Day and Pearl Jam. Green Day came out with their album “21st Century Breakdown” which featured one of the best top 10 music hits of the year “21 Guns”. Pearl Jam’s great album called “Backspacer” had several hits but none as wonderful as “Breathe”, a lovely and spare ballad.

All in all, 2009 saw many new top 10 music hits that have enhanced all of our listening lives. We hope that 2010 will see more of the same. With a new Keane album due to be released it sounds like this will be another banner year for alternative music.

I think that any guitar player would love to take lessons from Slash or Dave Navarro and now they can with the magic of the internet. Advanced guitar lessons on the internet are not only free but they feature some of the best guitar players in the business. On a recent clip on www.youtube.com, Dave Navarro, former lead guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers joins George Lynch, guitar god from Lynch Mob in showing some advanced guitar lessons for the general public. Navarro has an online show called Spread TV and he has different guests each week from the rock and roll world. With George Lynch they discuss intricate guitar licks and different techniques.

In another episode of Spread TV, also available on www.youtube.com, Dave Mustaine, the great guitar player for Mettalica, shows Dave how to play “spider chords”. Spider chords were invented by Dave Mustaine (or so he claims) and he has used them in bands like Metallica and Megadeath to great effect and to create some of the most memorable licks of all time.

There is a great clip available on youtube featuring the great Neal Schon of Journey fame teaching how to play the great song “Lights”. For advanced guitar lessons this one is great because it shows close ups of his fingering technique on the guitar neck. The bad part is that he does not stop and explain the parts. If you are a very advanced player you will not have much trouble copying his moves, but it would still be helpful to hear some commentary, even if it is just a little. A lot of these guitar guys don’t like to explain their moves and many of the clips are like this.

There are some great Slash (Guns ‘n Roses) clips available on www.youtube.com. One of the best instructional videos is a very short clip where he shows (not teaches) how to play the intro to “Paradise City”, one of Guns ‘n Roses biggest international hits. There are lots more famous guitar players on youtube but you have to search through a lot of junk in order to find them. If you are persistent you will find some gems though, like the guitar player from the Red Hot Chili Peppers who has posted lots of advanced guitar lessons of his own on there.

The very talented guitar player John Mayer shows how to play some great riffs on his video show sponsored by Guitar World, “How to Shred”. There is also a great video on there by the legendary jazz guitarist Larry Carlton, who has recorded with greats such as Steely Dan and many others.

For advanced guitar lessons there are some great DVDs available as well and you can get those online or at your local Guitar Center store or your local music supply store.

How many 80s music fans are there out there? I know that I am and hopefully there are many, many more. Of course, I love any music from the past.

If you grew listening to 80s music, take a few minutes to reminisce by learning some facts that you might not know about these hits.

As a child of the 1980′s, I grew up loving such musical groups and performers as INXS, Robert Palmer and U2, and I still find myself listening to a lot of their songs. That got me to wondering the other day why 80′s music hits are so timeless. It is not just that way for me or people from my generation, either.

One of my favorite 80′s music hits was “Need You Tonight” by INXS. I was just a little kid and remember listening to it over and over again. I thought it had the coolest music of any song that I had ever heard. Even to this day, when I hear it on the radio, I have to listen to it and sing along with all of the lyrics.

Robert Palmer was another great artist of the 1980′s whose song “Addicted to Love” was my brother’s favorite. We would be in our room hanging out, and he would play that song over and over again, and the truth of the matter is that I really didn’t mind. I loved it probably as much as he did.

As an American of Irish ancestry and a music lover as well, one of my favorite rock groups of all time is U2, and the 1980′s was when I was first introduced to them. The group had a lot of 80′s music hits, as that was the decade of the album “The Joshua Tree.” That particular album featured such songs as “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

I remember playing that cassette so much that it actually wore the tape out completely. I eventually bought it on CD, and I’ll pop it in from time to time just to sort of take me back to my youth.

I also had my first big crush in the 1980′s, and that was on the pop singer Debbie Gibson. When I first laid eyes on her, I fell deeply in love, and still find myself blushing a little when I see pictures of her today.

She had a couple of 80′s music hits, such as “Shake Your Love” and “Only in My Dreams.” I got a tape of hers for my birthday one year, and needless to say, it was my favorite present.

I have often wondered why 80′s music hits are so timeless for me. Perhaps it is because it takes me back to my childhood when I first developed my passion for music, and perhaps it is just that the music of the 1980′s was really that good.

I have a number of younger cousins who are also great music fans, and they love the music of the 1980′s, even though they were not even born yet. I’ll ask them why they like it, and they say that the music is cool, and in many instances, meaningful.

Whatever the reason, 80′s music hits still stand out to me as some of the best music ever produced and I feel fortunate to have come up during that decade in music.

Going to the cinema can feel like a thrilling experience to any person who chooses to participate in the event. What many do not appreciate, however, is that they can bring that exact surrounding back to where they live if they so choose. It is dubbed a home cinema, and when the right moves are taken and planned, the recollections that come from it will be priceless.

Before getting too deep into the venture, consider first what type of site you would like the film area to depict. Will the entire family be using it, or should the room give off an air of maturity for older folk? Must the room appear like an actual cinema, or is a comfortable home idea more apt? These must be kept in mind. Once you know the route you will be going in, it is key to then advance on to the colours. Choosing the inappropriate colour scheme can crush what you are undertaking to accomplish, so be careful. For instance, if you covet Earth hues, then bright pink would not work. A dvd recorder could be a great addition to your home cinema.

Think about the size of the selected place. This should be accepted if you wish to determine how effectively sound will travel, and thus where the audio systems must be positioned and how many. The dimensions the TV is also decided by the amount of space you have. Ask yourself how many items of furnishings must be used. How big or small should the items be? Setting everything together, only to find out that not everything fits or works would be quite a defeat. It would also suggest squandered income, as well. If you are not confident, ask somebody who has already put together a home movie theatre, or confer with a specialist.

Adorn your movie theatre area with objects that will help establish the ambience. This part is possibly the most entertaining, as you can allow your imagination to get creative, letting it pilot you where it will. If you have a favourite video, you may wish to ponder seeking to add things linked with it. If you simply desire it to look like a place to view movies, find posters and put them on the wall. You may also insert characteristics such as a popcorn appliance or choices of drinks.

A home movie theatre is a great way to articulate your interests and provide family time with your family and other loved ones. But bear in mind, never do what you do not deem is right. This is your job, and it should be treated as such. Should you run into any troubles, or consider that some building work is vital to reach your desires, check with a specialist that can grant the proper assistance.

Christmas is my favorite holiday, and the Christmas season is one of my favorite times of the year. I love all of the festivities and decorations, but one of the things I like the most are all of the great Christmas songs.

What I have come to learn over the years is that the top Christmas songs can be religious or secular, and regardless of your religious beliefs or lack thereof, you are probably very familiar with both kinds of song.

The first one that comes to mind when I think about the top Christmas songs is “O’ Holy Night,” which, of course, is made holy by the birth of Jesus Christ. This is the song that I have to hear every Christmas season at least once, or it really doesn’t feel like Christmas at all.

Another song that has to rank among the top Christmas songs is “Jingle Bells,” which of course is secular in nature. I think this more than any other song really illustrates the joyousness of the season, describing the scenery and activities that go on during the Christmas season.

One of the songs that I remember learning during the Christmas season when I was in school was “Frosty the Snowman.” I always loved this song, but I was also a little bit jealous. I grew up in Texas, where we hardly ever get snow, and I was not able to build a snowman each year.

Of all of the top Christmas songs I hear during the holiday season, my absolute favorite is “O Come, O Come Emanuel.” This is a religious song, obviously, and I love the beauty of the lyrics, but I also just like the music itself. It is so haunting to me that it definitely stands out from the rest.

Another of the top Christmas songs that I really like, but some people don’t seem to like at all, is “Jingle Bell Rock.” I know some people who seem to actually have an open disdain for this song, and I really don’t know why. I’ve always thought of it as being kind of fun and catchy.

“White Christmas” is another tune that many people consider to be one of the top Christmas songs and one that you almost always hear around Christmas time, and it is another secular song that can’t help but make you nostalgic for the holiday season.

The Christmas season is the most special time of the year for me, and I love all of the songs that go along with Christmas. Whether they are religious or secular, the top Christmas songs are loved by everyone who celebrates the holiday.

The Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) recorder is a storage system that functions like, and is comparable in several ways, to a VCR. DVD recorders register video on an internal disc within the DVD recorder, which is erasable and writable. They are capable to record from analogue video sources and in numerous instances from digital camcorders. The DVD recorder includes audio visual ports and can be used to register TV performances with the use of the embedded television tuner. The DVD recorder is offered in scores of configurations.

The recorders exist in three major kinds, the standalone DVD recorder, DVD/ Hard Drive unit, and mini-recorders. The standalone DVD recorder is operated in television and may be used to register programs. lots of hold MPEG-4 compression that is utilized for the real time compression of image data. Some enhancements found in some recorders will present time based correctors and noise diminution functions. The mini DVD recorders will be placed in digital camcorders. The DVD/Hard Drive units are employed in computers to write and read computer data and they offer writable and erasable media.

The standalone DVD recorder is not able to write or read information from a computer, but can register video in real time to a DVD disc. In order to connect with a PC, a standalone DVD would have to have drivers installed, and that is not part of the structure of recorders. However, with the use of specialized software for PC video editing, some DVD video files that were formed on the PC, may be sent to some DVD recorders using a firewire interface. This is not a typical process for a DVD recorder, but if it is doable the particulars would be portrayed in the operating manual. Any kind of modern TV, including a lcd tv, can be connected to a DVD recorder.

DVD recorders are very unproblematic appliances to function even though they may have a complicated design. They operate different recording formats, video and audio compression systems, several tuning options and several broadcast norms. These recorders supply good sound reproduction and high-quality image properties. Recordings survive longer than those on magnetic tape, and they do not have to be rewound or fast forwarded, given that they run through random access to the necessary video part.

The recorded videos are simply explored because of the presence of chapter menus. Loss of recording quality as a product of repeated generation loss and regular playbacks is kept to a bare minimum. If you are on the lookout for a DVD recorder, be certain to compare prices, contrast the recording times that are backed the speed of the unit, and the prospect of producing multiple recordings at the same time. Other items to look for are the warranty period, and the image and sound properties.

I am of the opinion that Neil Simon is one of the greatest contemporary playwrights in America, and my favorite Neil Simon play was also made into a terrific movie back in 1988.

Biloxi Blues is the story of Eugene Jerome, a young man from New York who has been drafted into the army during World War II and sent to do his basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi. There, he is enlisted with a group of guys from various places that bring their own unique idiosyncrasies and perspectives into the story to make for an interesting and diverse cast of characters.

He also is introduced to Sgt. Merwin J. Toomey, who is obviously not completely mentally stable, and that makes for some interesting story lines in and of itself.

What I like most about this particular Neil Simon play is that it is semi-autobiographical. Knowing that going into the play makes it that much more engaging, because you know that most of the things that happened to the main character actually happened to Simon himself.

Another thing that I liked about this Neil Simon play is that it addressed a lot of issues that would likely seem taboo for that particular time period. Subjects like race and ethnicity, homosexuality, anti-antisemitism, prostitution and Toomey’s mental illness were all featured in Simon’s play and provided an opportunity to see how those issues were dealt with (or not dealt with) back in the 1940s.

This Neil Simon play was made into the movie of the same name, and it was actually Matthew Broderick who played the role of Jerome in both the stage and film versions. The play made its debut in 1985, while the movie premiered three years later.

I think one of the things that appealed most to be about the play, and the movie, for that matter, was just the idea behind it all: the life of a group of regular guys, who are obviously young and somewhat immature, preparing to embark on the something so grand with no clue as to whether or not they would ever return.

They did have their misgivings at times, but they were still prepared to go and serve their country and give their lives if necessary for the greater cause. We have never had a conflict close to the scale of World War II in my lifetime, and I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

The Neil Simon play Biloxi Blues is one of my all-time favorite plays. It manages to weave humor into a very serious situation so effectively that it did not detract from the storyline, and it just makes you feel good watching it.

My love of classical music began as young boy and has only grown over the years. I collected tapes and CDs of my favorite composers and orchestras and listened to them on a regular basis growing up.
I went to my first live classical music concert when I was 14 years old, to see a production of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. It was during the Christmas season, so I was already in a good mood, but when I heard that opening chord and listed to the orchestra play those beautiful notes, I was transfixed, and knew that I was in for the experience of a lifetime.
When the concert was over, we went out to eat and she asked me what I thought. I told her that I had never seen anything like it, and that I wanted to go to as many live performances as possible. She laughed and said that it does have a tendency to get into your blood.
I attended my first opera when I was in my mid-20s. It was Tosca, my favorite opera of all, and it absolutely blew me away. Although I had the recording of the opera with Placido Domingo in the role of Cavaradossi, it was not nearly as breathtaking as seeing it live and hearing those wonderful arias performed right in front of me.

What exactly is blues piano? It is a music style and once you learn to play it on the piano you will stop sweating the learning of other music styles. Keep on reading and by the end of this article, you will know a great deal about blues music and playing it on the piano.

To start with, you must know 12-bar blues. This is a very common progression if you want to do blues piano playing. To play this particular blues form, most pianists make use of seventh chords. A song is broken into 3 sets. Each of the set consists of 4 bars. Start by playing the song on the C key. Use ‘I’ to illustrate the tone (C) in the C key. The IV tone is F and the V tone is G.

The initial set is played as I-I-I-I. The next set is played as IV-IV-I-I. The final set is V-IV-I-I. Use your right hand when playing these three sets on the piano. To come up with a sound that’s just like blues piano, try to master playing 7th chords. For your left hand, follow the 8-note pattern.

When I hear music like Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture or Pachelbel’s Canon, I am usually tempted to turn the stereo off. It’s not that they aren’t beautiful pieces of music, but for a serious classical music fan, it is about the equivalent of hearing “She Loves You” by the Beatles. In other words, I’ve heard them so many times that I can’t get anything new out of them.

Popular classical music certainly does have its place, however, especially when it comes to drawing in new listeners of classical music and, hopefully, instilling in them a love for the genre. The good thing about it is also the bad thing about it – you hear it all of the time.

Let’s start with a car commercial from a few years back where a bunch of guys ride by in a car, roll down the windows and start hurling water balloons at another guy. The commercial is in slow motion, and it is made to look like a Mafia hit. The guy that gets drilled drops his water balloon and slowly crumbles to the ground. It was very funny.

The song playing in the background is what I remember, because it was an aria from the opera Pagliacci, a great example of popular classical music that many people would recognize first as the music from that car commercial.

Another work of popular classical music that I saw recently on commercials for Subway restaurants is one that I have already mentioned, the 1812 Overture. In this commercial, it shows different people preparing to eat food from another fast food place, and their chairs break as they sit down, or their buttons snap and fly off, all while that overture is playing.

Popular classical music is used to promote many different products, and most people don’t even realize what the songs are. For instance, the music from the Helzberg Diamonds commercial is Palladio
by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.

Another example of popular classical music being used as a theme song in a commercial is George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue being used for United Airlines. It is funny, because this was one of the very first pieces of classical music that I ever heard, and it made me want to learn more about classical music.

With the fact that classical music is probably the least popular of all the major genres of music, I think it is important that the general public be exposed to popular classical music through such things as commercials. I have been around friends that will hear classical music in some advertisement and ask me what it is, and they really like it and want to listen to more. This could be the best way to expose the largest number of people to a very beautiful musical style.

I know of a lot of great musicians who have never written an original song in their life. They can play their instrument well enough but when it comes to creating an original song melody or lyrics to go with it, they just freeze up and just plain can’t do it. Some of the greatest technically brilliant musicians of all time were never able to write good, popular songs. Rock music has their fair share of these types of artists but this inability to write a good original song sometimes baffles the mind. Some of the worst instrumentalists of all time have written original rock songs that have made millions of dollars so it is bewildering to think that the best have trouble creating original tunes.

Although the left side and right side of the brain theory has been debunked, it is still basically true that creative people do not always make the best technicians and vice versa. We all know of the people that can fix anything but can’t write or create anything original to save their life. Before everyone gets their knickers pinched let me just add that this is just a truism and not the truth. The truth is that there are always exceptions to every rule. I am sure that there are great scientists out there that paint very well by night or play a mean blues guitar.

I compare the great instrumentalists to these technicians and scientists. They get so caught up in the minutiae and detail in the world of music theory that they can’t step back and write an original song. Writing an original song that is any good has to come from a wellspring of emotion and a profound depth of feeling. Original tunes are not created using a formula. That being said, there are some guidelines for writing popular and rock tunes and that formula has worked brilliantly for many years and for many of the top selling artists of all time.

The formula has to do with the structure of an original song, especially for pop, funk, or rock music. The structure is simple and goes like this: 1) the introduction which is usually four to eight bars in length before the verse; 2) the first verse; 3) either the second verse, or: 4) the chorus, then; 5) a solo; 6) the bridge; 7) repeat a verse; 8) repeat chorus once or as many times as you like, and finally; 9) the outro or the ending.

The chorus is also called “the hook” and may be repeated at the end while the recording fades. These are just general guidelines that songwriting experts over the years have established as being the most common to use. This does not teach you how to write a hit original song. You still need to use your imagination and have lots of feeling. Most of the time a hit original song comes from a person’s life experience or something painful that happened to them. Song hits from the past 50 years are full of dramatic and life-changing themes and lyrics.

There are structured classes where one can go and learn how to write songs, but no way can any of these classes guarantee that you will write a hit original song. The fact is that if you are writing with the expressed and intended purpose of writing a hit song, you will probably not succeed. True success comes from labors of love.

Music experts (and everyone is an expert on this subject) have come to agree on certain iconic classic rock albums as falling into a category above and beyond all others. Certainly there are classic rock songs and classic rock bands that are great, but entire classic rock albums that were truly great can be listed without too much discussion.

One of the greatest, if not the greatest of the classic rock albums was the White Album by the greatest rock band of all time (at least in the studio), the Beatles. This album by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison has come to be considered the greatest album ever recorded by many music critics and by music lovers all around the world. Some would argue that Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club was one of the greatest classic rock albums (and it is) but there are many reasons why the White Album is better.

For those of you not familiar with the White Album, it was revolutionary not just in concept but in appearance. Back in the days of vinyl records this LP (long playing) record came packaged in a plain white cover which you opened up to a double spread and it was plain white inside as well as on the back. The words “the Beatles” were actually embossed on the cover in small letters printed diagonally but no ink. There was a huge poster included in the artwork which you could pull out and unfold. It had lyrics to all of the songs on one side and an artistic collage full of artwork, photos, and drawings of the band on the other side. This was truly a work of art and that was not all, you also got four color portrait photos, one for each of the boys in the band. Most kids back then hung those up in their bedrooms along with the poster. If you can find a copy of the album intact with the original glossy pictures and poster it is definitely worth a lot of money on ebay.

The White Album itself was a double album and still considered one of the greatest classic rock albums of all time. Starting off with the unforgettable “Back in the U.S.S.R.” it was immediately controversial. Remember that those were the days of the cold war and in the late sixties people were starting to protest the Vietnam War and many hippies and peaceniks wanted to normalize relations with Russia.

Many of the songs had psychedelic overtones and John Lennon and George Harrison had much to do with that. Songs like “Dear Prudence”, “Glass Onion”, “Helter Skelter”, and “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide (Except for Me and My Monkey)” were revolutionary in their uses of electric guitar and drumming. These hard rocking songs were side by side with some softer unforgettable songs by Paul such as “Mother Nature’s Son”, “Blackbird”, and “I Will”. Paul could rock out as well and did so on songs like “Obladi Oblada” and could be whimsical with a song like “Rocky Raccoon”.

All in all this was one of the greatest classic rock albums of all time bar none and you will be hard pressed to find much disagreement out there. If you are one of the few who have not had the privilege to listen to this recording please run out right now and pick up a copy (also of course available on itunes).
